Let's be honest - don't trust the green beers. They probably aren't craft! We can guarantee you this nitro milk stout from @lefthand is our four leaf clover of the night! 🍀 Happy St. Patricks day! Stay safe! 🍀🍺
There is a lot of debate over the topic of beer shelf life. Most people will say "ahh it's no big deal, that IPA will taste fine in 8 months," but the look on any beer geeks face after hearing a comment like that is priceless! "NOOOOO!! You must drink it within a few months!" You respond. In more recent times, breweries are also trying to push this awareness to the common public. You must drink this tasty brew right away! But, why is that? It's not just so you will drink more, faster. There is a rhyme to the reason.
It's the almighty hops. A lot of recent breweries are taking this to the next level by dry hopping with multiple hop varieties. While this may be the best thing in the world because of the wonderful aromas they produce, those hop oils are the first thing to fade and make a beer taste flat and oxidized. Also the isomerized alpha acids that produce that well known bitterness characteristic will not fade as fast, but definitely will fade with time.
So, if you want to experience all of the full flavor and juicy hoppiness, then you better get ready to drink that puppy right away! There is no better time then now. Respect the almighty hop and consume your beer when it’s fresh. If your beer is all about the hop aroma and flavor, then aging does not have a place in it’s lifetime, which should be relatively short. Many other non hoppy beers will possibly benefit from some aging, as you will find with many imperial stouts that breweries commonly release for anniversary ales.
The most noticeable to jump on this bandwagon is Stone with the Enjoy By series. It's a huge one, at 9.4% ABV and 88 IBU's. This double IPA has 11 different hops, so it's no surprise this beer is to be consumed within a month of its release. This insane beer is amazingly balanced. At first taste you can’t possibly realize the time they put into each hop variety and what it has to offer this beer. After that you realize the large amount of hops are masking the huge 9.4% ABV tag! Following that monster ABV you notice the beautifully crafted malt character. Last, and certainly not least, you notice this is without a doubt the most complex and devastatingly beautiful double IPA you've found!
To give you a better insight on the hop character in this beer, check out this clip from Stone's brewmaster Mitch Steele: "Hopping, as might be expected, was over the top. First, the brew was mash hopped with Calypso, a beautiful fruity hop that we also used in our Stone 16th Anniversary IPA, after which we kettle hopped with a very small dose of Super Galena hop extract for bittering. Then, using a technique that I’ve seen some homebrew circles call “hop bursting,” we loaded up very heavily on the flavor hops at the end of the boil and in the whirlpool. Simcoe, Delta, Target and Amarillo were used in the late kettle hop. Motueka, Citra, and Cascade were used for the whirlpool hop. As you can clearly tell, this beer was super hoppy even before we dry-hopped it, but then we went for it…dry-hopping with 1lb per barrel EACH of New Zealand Nelson Sauvin and Australian Galaxy."
We hope you are just as excited about hops as we are. Make it a point to drink those hoppy beers right away. And remember don't let it last too long, and respect the almighty hops!
